For the best results, if you want to earn what you’re worth as a writer, I’d recommend adding at least one of the paid job boards to your routine. You can get excellent freelance writing jobs for less than $50 per month and all you have to do is secure one paying gig to cover the expense. In many cases, if you get one good paying job from any of these job boards it will pay for an entire year of membership at both of the job boards that require a membership fee.

Hi Holly! There are a ton of awesome ideas here that I am eager to explore! I recently started a blog that I’m going to use as a portfolio for my pieces and hopefully will submit them somewhere for pay and future writing gigs. I am currently working in a full time office job and would like to move from this lifestyle that allows me to write remotely on a more flexible schedule. I have just submitted an essay to a contest about my experiences as a person with a disability. I’m wondering if you have any additional suggestions on where to send my essay, or else any information you can provide as I try to embark upon this difficult career change. Thanks so much!

Susan says: Something that a lot of content writers don’t factor into their quoting is the fact that you usually need to spend a bit of time researching your topics.

Unless they specifically spell out that there is no payment for posts, you don’t know. So when you do send in your pitch, it never hurts to ask. I tried a huge number of ways of making money online — from buying wholesale and selling retail on eBay to creating “niche sites” in an effort to create advertising revenue. But to cut a long story short, I spent months working on business ideas that all failed spectacularly. Far from making money, I was losing it.
Sell WordPress Themes Over the years I’ve come to realize that quoting for work is a real art form in and of itself. Deciding what to charge clients can be really tricky and often depends on a lot of factors that you might never have thought relevant:

Do you have a high-speed internet connection, a computer, and a love of writing? Do you want to turn that passion into a blogging career or at least supplement your everyday income with some sweet blogging money? While many people think of the blogging world with Arianna Huffington in the back of their minds, it is highly unlikely that your blogging career will net you six figures or more. You might be able to bring home a couple hundred or even a couple thousand dollars a month. To get a paid blogging job, you’ll need to create your own blog and to write content for other blogs, websites, or publications for free. After you have gained blogging experience, you can network with other bloggers and writers or apply for lucrative blogging positions.
Hi Elna. Great post. I’ve been a freelance writer, and digital nomad for three years now. I, unfortunately, started out on one of the writing mills that pays very little. I made quite a bit on there, but eventually left as I was writing 8-10 hours a day for next to nothing. I’ve tried a number of your suggestions and the one I’ve had the most luck with, by far, was cold contacting. I’ll contact 10-12 websites a day and send them a sample of my work. I get a few new clients a week, plus all of my repeat customers. It’s gotten to the point I need junior writers to pick up some of the slack. For anyone out there interested in being a freelance writer there’s plenty of work out there.
