Affiliate marketing is for me the best way to earn money with a blog. The main issue and challenge is to drive enough traffic as conversion is very low when it comes to affiliate links…
Make sure to pick up the magazine or view the online version to see what stories they publish and like. Once you become familiar with the publication, just submit your email and story idea. The URL or name of the site doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It just needs to be something simple and straightforward.
There are numerous host sites to choose from. Many of them are free, but offer services from a low premium. Blogger and Wordpress are the two most popular blogging outlets on the web. You can start your blog in a matter of minutes on both, purchase domain names at a low premium or even get a free site address under their banner (e.g. yourblogname.wordpress.com).
Bottom line is, don’t get too excited about massive payouts. Realistically you’ll be looking at a range of $5 – $12 per article or blog post. The sad fact is that real writing jobs, along with other coveted online work, gets outsourced overseas, making it difficult for US based freelancers to compete and making them work for much lower pay.
I have indeed stopped responding to comments on here, but I still get a few emails per month from readers of this post, and I help each and every one. Please send me an email at [email protected] if you have any questions.

10. Keep raising your rates. As you move up, your rates should increase. Gradually drop lower-paying blog clients in favor of better-paying ones. Think in terms of how long it takes you to create a post, and aim for a rate of $50-$100 an hour. Don’t forget to charge by the hour if the client also wants you to do social-media promotion of your posts, or needs advice on blog-marketing strategy. I’ve seen rates as high as $300 a blog post, and $100 a post is fairly common. Don’t settle for peanuts — keep looking until you find clients who understand how a powerful blog will help build their business.
Be a good person: They treat clients like names on a screen, you treat clients like humans and people who can – and will – dramatically influence your success as a freelancer.
Great tips Kevin. Did as you advised and sent out about 170 emails but no response. Ended giving some of the companies a follow-up call and they said they had in-house writers. Is there any advice you could give?
March 23, 2018 at 4:39 am Becoming a novelist is tough, but many people will admit it’s their ultimate dream. If you’ve been working on a novel, the first step is to get feedback from honest readers. Ask them to critique your work and be brutally honest. Once you’ve drafted your novel with feedback, you’ll submit excerpts to agents. If an agent is intrigued by your excerpt and summary, they may request your entire novel and then agree to represent you. Your agent will shop publishing houses to find someone to publish your book.

You’re welcome! So happy you found the right post! Letting someone else take credit for your work can be demoralizing. You will likely have to sign a non-disclosure agreement that specifies you can never imply that the name on the cover isn't the person who actually authored the book. You might even have to watch your client explain to an interviewer how he or she went about writing the words you so painstakingly crafted.
And the more realistic your plan, the better. Don’t bet the farm on a path that only a small handful of super talented (or incredibly lucky) outliers have followed. Choose one that’s worked for lots of people.

Every marketer has an opinion when it comes to the efficacy of paid vs. organic search marketing. Each has advantages: paid search can get you in front of new audiences quickly, while organic search is vastly preferred by customers and draws in the lion’s share of clicks.

Teaching is not a “fall back” job. It is often referred to as a “calling.” Teachers love it for the creativity, challenge, and fun working with discovering learners… but it is a demanding job. Some positions may be easy to get, but it can also be very competitive to be hired or to keep a position. I’ve worked desk jobs before where I had my own laptop out and snuck in writing between phone calls; this will not be that job.
I am very cautious of the content mills that you mention, but I can’t seem to find much information on which websites are definitely content mills to be avoided. The only way that I have been able to tell if it is a company to be avoided thus far is if the pay is very low, if fines for late submission are extortionate, or if answers to my questions aren’t satisfactorily answered.
November 4, 2014 at 8:03 pm As always, it’s great to hear readers’ thoughts in the comments. these rates, but my point is that they are not market rates and writers shouldn’t settle for these rates when there are opportunities out there that will pay a living wage.
